Bespoke PDU Solution for a UK Windfarm

June 2025

The Challenge
A windfarm in the UK required a custom-designed power distribution unit (PDU) with the capability to support an additional string of batteries. However, space within the existing cabinet was limited, making it difficult to integrate additional power storage using traditional methods. The challenge was to optimise the available space while ensuring reliable power management for the windfarm’s operations.

The Solution
Alan Campbell Engineering Services (ACES) developed a bespoke solution by reconfiguring the cabinet layout. Instead of using a traditional modular inverter and separate DC system, ACES installed a Sierra system, which integrates both functions into a single, space-efficient unit. This approach allowed for:
•The creation of additional space within the cabinet.
•The integration of an extra battery string to enhance power storage capacity.
•A streamlined and efficient power management system with reduced component complexity.

By implementing the Sierra system, ACES successfully met the windfarm’s requirements without the need for a larger cabinet or significant structural modifications.

The Outcome
The customised PDU solution provided by ACES optimised cabinet space while enhancing the windfarm’s energy storage capacity. The removal of the traditional modular inverter and DC system not only freed up space but also simplified maintenance and improved overall system efficiency. The windfarm now benefits from a more robust and scalable power solution that supports its operational needs.
